The Killer

First Transmitted: January 12, 1983

Another major "Guthrie Episode" sees him deer-hunting with Daniel but when they catch up with the stag they've been tracking for days Guthrie is unable to pull the trigger. "You should have seen him Adam," says a tearful, upset and confused Guthrie back at the ranch. "He was just so beautiful."

Returning back out into the wild, Daniel and Guthrie nearly stumble straight into a cougar mountain lion. Daniel is delighted to recognize the animal as "Scarback," a well known wild animal who lives in the area. Daniel relates the story about how, many years ago, the much younger mountain lion once attacked their father's prize bull. Their father shot at the cougar, but missed, preferring instead to just frighten the creature off. His deep respect for the cougar was subsequently passed on to his sons. The McFadden's are duly concerned when Scarback is blamed for recent livestock killings and a hunter is called in to exterminate him.

Sharing Guthrie's newly discovered empathy for wild animals, and determined to save Scarback, all seven brothers head off armed with tranquilizer guns to catch him before the hunter finds him.
