"He who learns, must suffer. And even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart."

Director Marvin Chomsky presents a loving tribute to the American politician Robert F. Kennedy. The film is based on the best-selling biography written by Arthur M. Schlesinger, a Pulitzer Prize-winner and Kennedy confidente. The movie also presents a close examination of American history documenting events from the 1950's and 1960's including the fight for Civil Rights, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War.

Although this was River's third TV movie, his appearance as Robert Kennedy's son, Robert Kennedy Jnr, was unfortunately a very limited part. Indeed, whilst the film stretches out to more than five hours in length, River's scenes if added together, would total less than a minute.

Also to be found playing the parts of Kennedy children are a very young Jason Bateman and Shannen Doherty.
