"I should see 'East of Eden'. I should see some of his films. I should. But in a way I don't want to spoil it, you know? I don't want to put too much information into my head. I like the idea that the only Brando film I've seen is 'Streetcar Named Desire'. One day I'll see some of these films but I have to do a few more movies before I start getting involved in past things, because it probably can influence you quite heavily."

River Phoenix on James Dean.

"In Stand By Me I realized that what I was creating was going to live on far longer than anything of me as a person. The characters are more powerful that the person that creates them."

River Phoenix

"You see people you work with closely change every day and get really selfish. Like, I've been getting acclaim for Stand By Me. People say, 'the movie's so good, you're going to be the next this or the next that....' Take it the wrong way and you can get really high on yourself. You get pampered. You hang out at a ritzy hotel, get room service at the snap of your fingers, or have a limo, which is really weird. You start expecting special treatment from other people. You get snobby and don't have time for the fans on the street who respect your work and want some contact. Or you start saying, 'Oh, this friend isn't good enough for me because he's not in the business. I'll have to be friends with someone who's more important'. You can change, and it's sad."
