Mike Waters suffers from the medical condition known as narcolepsy in which the sufferer falls into a deep spasmodic sleep. These attacks are generally brought on in the middle of stressful situations. Mike was placed in a children's home as a baby when the authorities questioned his Mother's skills as a parent, so he has never experienced a stable family life. Terrified of the police, he barely manages to survive on the streets, earning a meager living the only way he knows how - as a street hustler and prostitute. For the last three and a half years Mike has found a good companion in Scott Favor, the son of the Mayor of Portland who rebelled against his wealthy family and chose to live on the streets instead. Scott looks out for Mike and takes care of him but Mike misread Scott's actions and ultimately fell in love with him. In the hope of getting some clues as to his origins, Mike visited his brother Richard who lives in Idaho and earns money as an artist. Richard tells Mike that his father was a gambler who didn't love their mother and would not marry her. Mike was then told that his mother killed his father and she had to go into hiding. Mike would have none of this and accused his brother of being his real father. "You know too much," replied his brother.

With the death of his father, Scott Favor received his inheritance and turned his back not only on his life on the steets but also on Mike as well.
