What is happening to Brian Ellsworth? Is he a brilliant boy quoting Shakespeare profusely or a dummy almost unable to write or even read? Is he a good pupil trying very hard to do his homework or just a brat clowning around in front of his class? He is good at sport and he especially enjoys running but why is he unable to respect the basic rules? Does he cheat when he cannot follow his lane on the running track and crosses the white lines? Is he a good and loving brother who helps Robby to read and tells him stories or an unreliable selfish boy who makes no effort to remember when it's time to collect his brother from school? It is readily apparent that his mother, Barbara, cannot cope with her son's behavior. It seems it's not the first time such things have happened to Brian. She finds no time and no opportunity to really speak with him and she just complains. Brian is not stupid. He understands something is wrong but he's too young to put a name to his difficulties. He is also too shameful to even admit there is a problem except to his little brother. So he takes refuge in denial.

So, who could help the boy? Certainly not his mother as she always lives in a time trial. His father Walter doesn’t live at home anymore. Kim, a friend from school, guesses something is wrong but cannot put a finger on it. His Maths teacher is not an educator, just a teacher, and sometimes an angry teacher.

Maybe the English teacher, Miss Thomas, could help. She noticed the trouble, she feels concerned...
