Rio's Attic: Celebrating the Life and Times of a Dearly Missed River Phoenix

October 31, 1999

Dear Rio Trio,

I have been browsing through your site for the last two hours. River and I go way back... well, I did see "Stand By Me" in the theatres... three times. The movie symbolized everything that was distressing me regarding my relationship with my father... so I took him. We have been on far better terms ever since.

So River... I owe you big time.

While I am not a rabid "must own / see everything that River ever did / touched"... I must admit to buying Stephen King's book which had "The Body" in it. For me, having grown up in New Hampshire, it was like old home week. You, of course, realize that the novella was set in Maine. I pondered maps for days and felt as though I knew exactly where the story took place.

I would have never bothered if River had not brought the Chambers boy to life for me... us all!

Years later, on a November morning, I was driving to work on an inter-state highway doing about 85 MPH near Lawrence, Massachusetts when I heard over the radio that River had stepped out. The pain was so intense that I had to pull over... or risk getting into an accident.

I didn't cry then, nor later... after all the articles, stories, web sites... including yours... until reaching your page tonight outlining what the site was for and how we could take up the causes.

Us yankee men tend to hold things in for a while... you helped me express a belated grief, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are special people who deserve much credit.

Yours in peace,

Wally Keniston
