Filmed near Roswell, New Mexico, River plays the part of Talbot Roe who guards the body of his wife who has died in childbirth.

Even away from the comfort of a studio-based set, he enjoyed the seven-week shoot working with screenwriter and director, Sam Shepard. "The first time I met Sam," said River, "I felt like we were an uncle and nephew out doing their chores on the farm. Without a spoken word, I felt warm and secure and there was an instant trust. I knew it would be a pure existance."
