Patriotic American Jeff Grant applies to join the Air Force only to discover that his parents are in fact KGB agents. This movie was also extensively edited and shortened and released under the name of The Sleepers.

River with co-star Lucy Deakins,
a character cut from The Sleepers.

Iris Burton, River's agent, felt that this script along with his previous film A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon would show the full range of his acting abilities. River, on the other hand, found the whole plot rather farfetched. "I really didn't like the way the Russians were portrayed - it was a bit stereotypical," he said.
River had become close with the directors of each of his previous films but on this occasion he was to clash with Richard Benjamin accusing him of treating him like a child. Benjamin however, was to talk very highly of River. "He is not only a superb actor but he is real. Only the truth is in him, and it's wonderful to see."
